Range Rules

Non Members may wish to print and complete the "Release From Liability and Indemnity Agreement" form to bring with them when visiting. Copies should be available at all ranges for organized activities.

The Fin and Feather Club offers a variety of programs and facilities for the firearms user.  For hotgunners we have both trap and skeet available, with one skeet field and two trap fields.  We use automatic machines and have a new voice release system installed on our primary trap range.  Hours of operation are Saturday from 9:30 AM to noon or until all shooters are through, and on Tuesdays with the skeet field opening at 5:30 and the trap range starting by 6:30.  12 and 20 Gauge shells are available and folks who would like to try the sport but don't yet have a gun can always find someone happy to help them get started with instruction and the loan of equipment.  Cost for members to shoot either skeet or trap is $3 per round or 10 for $25.  This, of course, does not include the cost of shells. Non-members cost is $4 to cover the cost of birds and equipment.  Ranges are in operation year round with the exception of being closed for the firearms deer season.  Members are also welcome to use the trap field with their own throwers when the club equipment is closed.  We try to keep the broken birds all in the same area.

New Shooting sport - Sporting Clays- Fin And Feather Club has a new shotgun activity. Bob Fenstermacher has rallied the workers and rounded up the equipment to start a sporting clays type program. It is a cross between five stand and regular sporting clays. The shooter is challenged with a wide variety of target presentations in natural settings as in regular sporting clays, but by using several throwers creatively arranged the shooters don't have the physical challenge of a long walk over hill and dale. The course undergoes frequent changes so it will always be new. Five different targets are used: standard 135mm birds, 90mm birds, the tiny 60mm's, batteaus, and rabbits. There are 50 birds to the game, and you will need at least 50 shells. A few more are suggested as the shooter is allowed to shoot twice at single targets. The cost is three card punches or $9 for members, $12 for non-members. You can give it a try Sundays from 10:AM until 2:00 PM or until all shooters are satisfied, whichever is first.

The handgun range has target frames at 25 yards, portable frames to set at other distances, tables and benches, and two falling plate racks that can be reset from the firing line using rope pulls.  The plate racks can be used for straight wall pistol cartridges less than full 44 magnum loads.  Targets are restricted to paper targets except for the steel racks.  This range is also used by area law enforcement groups and West Shore Community College law enforcement classes for training.

Two other ranges on the grounds are the 50 yard and 100 meter ranges, both of which have covered shooting benches and portable target frames to provide shooting distances to suit the users needs.  The 100 meter range has markers imbedded in the ground on both sides of the range at 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards to place portable frames accurately for testing purposes.  It also has steel rails in place as bases for .22 silhouette targets.  We ask that these bases not be used except for .22 rimfire targets, as they are of mild steel and are seriously damaged by more powerful cartridges.  There is also a shooting bench on this range at 200 yards for use when no one else is present if you would like to sight in your rifle for 200 yards.

Activities:

  • regular trap and skeet shooting days
  • club shotgun championships are held in late summer or early fall
  • .22 fun silhouette shoots for kids and adults are held monthly during the spring and summer
  • regular falling plate hand gun speed matches as interest indicates throughout the summer
  • Cowboy Action matches will be held on the third Saturday of each month, April through October of 2007
  • New program - Sporting Clays

Many young people have received their introduction to firearms when visiting and participating with a school class, scouts, 4H, church or other youth group, and each year the volunteer instructors from the club provide hunter safety training to many area youth and adults.  The club also has a program of training for the concealed pistol license program that is offered to the general public and to members at a very significant savings.
